“Very enjoyable read. As always characters were believable and felt a connection to them. Love all her books! Can’t wait for the next one!!”
“Another great story by Kristen James. I have read many of her books. But, this one tugged at my heart. I loved this story. It portrayed the love between husbands and wives, friends and children for their parents. Showed true life trials and tribulations. Yet – still a happy and surprising ending.”
THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY:
I got the idea for this story in 2010 while in Costa Rica, and at home I wrote about 10,000 words before moving on to other things. It bothered me, though, because I’ve never abandoned a story like that. Three years later, I came across the file on my computer and realized I was ready to write it. I had fun diving back into the material, looking over pictures and remembering my trip there. The book is very different, but my characters went to the same area, beaches, and even businesses that I did. While writing the book, I absolutely loved how the characters came alive in their own right and all the different conflicts converged. I hope you enjoy reading Costa Rica!
Sergeant Lance Smith lost his men in Afghanistan, lost his wife to divorce, and came home to an empty life. He expected to come home with his best friend, Jared. That didn’t happen either. There is one thing he needs to do. He’d promised Jared he would visit his sister if anything happened to him. It doesn’t seem like much, but Lance needs something to keep him moving forward. He just needs to track her down first.
Once a nurturing heart and a competent psychiatrist, Sierra Thomas is now hiding from the world. She tried to make a difference and failed. She couldn’t stop her brother—the brother she’d raised—from enlisting in the Marines. Then she failed her patients, ending her career. She retreated to her family’s orange groves, hoping to forget the pain of her past.
In a world where you can lose everything in any given second, it’s dangerous to open your heart. But giving up and living “dead” isn’t what life is about.
“From bestselling author Kristen James comes a hauntingly beautiful story of loss, heartache and redemption. Frozen in a damaged marriage, Trey and Rosette find themselves jolted by an unexpected tragedy – and an orphaned niece in need of a family.” Bookbub
The mighty Pacific has a rugged, rough, unforgiving beauty—like Trey’s life.
After an IED brought his Navy career to an end, Trey became an EMT in his hometown of Coos Bay, Oregon. He struggles with PTSD, which affects his ability to do his job and connect with his family. His wife seems to be living life without him.
Rosette can’t figure out what happened to her marriage, or to Trey—the man she once so desperately loved. It feels like she’ll lose everything along with him. Meanwhile, he’s enclosed in his own world without her.
Their marriage is on its last legs when their family is faced with two deaths and an orphan. They’re already raising two young children and Trey’s teenage brother, Alex. Trey and Rosette make a shaky agreement: to play “family” for now so they can take care of Trey’s recently orphaned niece. But can faking it ever be enough? It’s make-it or break-it time. If they split apart, who will raise Hope?

THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY:
A tiny flash of inspiration started this book. I saw a picture: a couple separating, and as one stepped out the door to leave, they found a tiny, abandoned newborn on their doorstep. I wondered, what would happen if a couple decided to divorce and found a baby like that? The finished novel is a bit different; I wanted to make the story more believable and complicated. The baby is actually a family member, and the main characters have their own family to consider too. Trey and Rosette have two small children in the story, plus they’re raising Trey’s teenage brother, Alex. These characters came vividly alive to me while writing, and the story seemed to naturally develop from their personalities and the conflicts in the story. It was great fun to write! Of course, it deals with difficult, emotional issues, but I wanted to show the beauty in life despite that.
